ABSTRACT
I briefly introduce the concept of stochastic systems and the Shannon entropy and apply these ideas to chaotic synchronization. The discovery of chaos in nature, and the fact that chaotic systems can synchronize with one another, has led to an avalanche of research in nonlinear dynamics. Chaotic systems are often confusingly described as deterministic and random at the same time. Through a simple transformation of chaotic waveforms into symbol sequences one can prove that chaotic systems are, in fact, stochastic. This fact has important implications in understanding chaotic synchronization and control. I report results from a chaotic synchronization experiment performed here at AMCOM that helps illuminate these concepts.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Dr. Pethel received his doctorate in Physics from the University of Alabama in Huntsville on synchronization and control of chaos in diode laser arrays. Since 1987 he has been a member of the Quantum Optics group in the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command located on Redstone Arsenal, AL. His current research interests are in chaos engineering, complexity, and quantum computing.
